Open De España In Barcelona Expected To Have Economic Impact Of $67M On Region

The College of Economists of Catalonia (CEC) said that the European Tour's Open de España, which will take place from May 14-17 in Barcelona, will have an economic impact of €60M ($67M) on the region, according to the EFE. The CEC analyzed how the Open de España will be organized and managed. The tournament is expected to attract around 40,000 fans. Catalan Golf Federation President Albert Durán "highlighted the support of Catalan golf institutions for golf and sports in general" and revealed that the cost of organizing the tournament -- whose TV coverage will reach 400 million viewers -- will be around €3.5M ($3.9M), including €1.5M ($1.7M) in prizes. A total of 240 journalists from 10 countries will broadcast the tournament, which will air for 240 live hours on 45 TV channels. Fans attending the tournament are expected to reserve more than 500 hotel rooms in Terrasa, Sabadell and Barcelona. On Monday, a promotional video for the Open de España was released. The spot features Spanish golfer Sergio García, Rafael Nadal and former Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff (EFE, 5/4).
