Mexico National Commission for Physical Culture & Sport (CONADE) Dir ALFREDO CASTILLO named former Mexican national football team coach HUGO SÁNCHEZ an ambassador of the institution. The naming of Sánchez is part of CONADE's effort to "strengthen youth and scholastic leagues." Castillo "highlighted the importance of the Mexican government propelling sports" and tweeted, "Children will receive all of CONADE's support with Hugo Sánchez as an ambassador in our scholastic leagues" (LA AFICIÓN, 4/29). ... Interpol said that former Colombian footballer FREDDY RINCÓN "is wanted for questioning in Panama over alleged money-laundering." Interpol issued a red notice, which seeks "the location and arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition or similar lawful action." Rincon is wanted in Panama "on money laundering and drugs-related criminal conspiracy charges" (BBC, 4/30). ... Delegates "stood at the start of the 26th Asian Football Confederation Congress for a minute's silence to respect more than 5,200 people who died and the tens of thousands left homeless in last week's Nepal earthquake disaster" (REUTERS, 4/30). ... Former Belgian U21 int'l GREGORY MERTENS "collapsed on the pitch after 15 minutes of Lokeren's reserve game against Genk on Monday after suffering cardiac arrest." He "received CPR on the pitch and was placed on a life support machine in Genk hospital, but his club confirmed that he passed away on Thursday afternoon." He "was 24" (REUTERS, 4/30).
