Donald, Eric Trump Outline Changes To Turnberry For Future Opens

Donald Trump has "confirmed changes" to the Ailsa Course at Turnberry, including the ninth hole being "turned into a par 3, with a new green set to be built close to the iconic lighthouse at the Ayrshire resort," according to Martin Dempster of the SCOTSMAN. Unveiled in full by Trump's son Eric and course designer Martin Ebert, the alterations to the Open Championship course "will also see a dogleg being taken out of the 18th fairway and a new tee being built there close to the dunes." Trump Jr. said, "Our plans are extensive and will offer a new playing experience, which will be unrivaled anywhere in the world." Every green on the course will be "dug up and relaid, with the majority of the work commencing when the course closes" on Sept. 27, with the planned reopening next June. Ebert: "There is huge international respect for the existing course at Turnberry and therefore these proposals will generate great debate in the golfing world. We have been very careful to make an in-depth study of the evolution of golf at Turnberry before making these proposals" (SCOTSMAN, 4/21). REUTERS' Andrew Both reported the next available Open slot is '20 and the younger Trump is "hopeful the R&A will award another championship to his course." He said, "It’s really up to the R&A. We’d love to make it happen” (REUTERS, 4/21).
