Football Notes: Ligue 1 To Use Goal-Line Technology Next Season

The French League (LFP) said that Ligue 1 "will use goal-line technology" next season. GLT "is currently used in the English Premier League and was also used at the World Cup in Brazil last year" (REUTERS, 4/16). ... The FA responded to a campaign by the family of former English footballer Jeff Astle "by establishing a panel of experts to guard against the threat of head injuries." Amid growing concerns about the short- and long-term risks associated with head injuries -- particularly from on-field collisions -- the panel, which will include leading neurologists, "will try to establish the extent of the problem and explore ways of reducing the threat to players' health" (LONDON TIMES, 4/16). ... Sardar Naveed Haider "was elected president of the Pakistan Football Federation's largest regional body late on Friday after a chaotic election," which FIFA was "dragged into and a government-backed candidate barred from." The PFF said that Haider, who told the Dawn newspaper his phone line had been hacked and he had suffered threats if he did not withdraw from the race, was elected head of the Punjab FA until '19 "with a majority." The election win for the PFF's marketing consultant "was a win for PFF President Faisal Saleh Hayat, who is expected to face a strong challenge from another government-backed candidate for his position in July" (REUTERS, 4/18).
