Football Notes: Argentine Match Abandoned After 30 Minutes Due To Fan Violence

Argentine first division side Arsenal's match at home vs. Aldosivi on Monday was "abandoned after half an hour because of fighting among fans that spilled into clashes with police." The Argentine FA will "set a new date for the remaining 60 minutes to be played." Trouble started outside the Julio H Grondona ground in the suburb of Sarandi when rival factions of Arsenal fans "fought each other then clashed with police trying to stop the violence." Rubber bullets were fired and "stones thrown in the surrounding streets and fans took their fight onto the terraces" (REUTERS, 3/31). ... UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Montenegro and Russia "after Saturday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Podgorica was abandoned in the second half following crowd trouble and a scuffle among the players." UEFA said on Monday it was probing the "setting off and throwing of fireworks and objects" by Montenegro and Russia fans during the Group G match (REUTERS, 3/30). ... The Confederation of African Football said Tuesday that "it had rejected an appeal by Tunisia" against a $50,000 fine for violent conduct by its players at the African Cup of Nations. However, CAF did not ban the North African country from the next edition of the tournament -- as it had threatened to do -- after the Tunisian Football Federation made a ''a formal apology'' for accusing CAF of being biased against it (AP, 3/31).
