Ryder Cup Director Says Italy's 2022 Course Requires Changes

Italy's bid for the 2022 Ryder Cup will "require overhauling some holes" on the Marco Simone club outside Rome, according to the AP. European Ryder Cup Dir Richard Hills said Friday as he and other officials wrapped up a three-day visit to Italy, "The thoughts of length and some of the angles on the holes is being reviewed. But we look forward to seeing what will be put forward in the coming month." The Jim Fazio-designed Simone course hosted the 1994 Italian Open but is "not up to date for current competition." Hills added, "There is some work to be done at it, which is known." The course is located in Guidonia, 27km (17mi) northeast of Rome's center, and the capital city is "visible on a clear day from parts of the layout." Hills: "That's something pretty special that the Eternal City of Rome can be seen from the 18th tee of a potential Ryder Cup course" (AP, 3/27).
