Brasileiro Clubs Fight For Bigger Shares Of Revenue From Televised Games

Sparked by "dissatisfaction with the payments they will receive ... as of 2016 for the Campeonato Brasileiro games," several Brasileiro clubs are "preparing to fight" for an increase in compensation for televised games, according to ESTADÃO. TV network Globo divided Brasileiro clubs "into five groups, in accordance with audience," to establish how payments would be distributed. Through the contract "signed with Globo, between '16 and '18," Corinthians and Flamengo, in the first group, will receive R$170M ($56.3M) per year. São Paulo, in the second group, will receive R$110M ($36.4M) per year. Palmeiras and Vasco, in the third group, will receive R$100M ($33.1M) each per year. However, "the problem" is that, as of '16, "the payment difference between groups will increase significantly." This year, Flamengo and Corinthians will receive an additional R$30M ($10M) over São Paulo and R$40M ($13.2M) over Palmeiras and Vasco. In '16, though, "the difference will increase to" R$60M ($19.8M) and R$70M ($21.2), "respectively." This made clubs in groups two through five "try to reduce the difference for the 'top class.'" Vasco President Eurico Miranda: "That's what Vasco is questioning. Why this difference? Vasco can't be negatively impacted." Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) President Marco Polo Del Nero said that the CBF "has spoken to Globo" about the issue and he "believes an agreement is possible" (ESTADÃO, 3/5).
