Etihad Stadium Will Be Ready For A-League Game Only Days After Speedway Event

Etihad Stadium CEO Paul Sergeant "has insisted that the stadium's pitch will be in a suitable condition to host an A-League match just days after staging the Australian Speedway Grand Prix in October," according to Ronny Lerner of THE AGE. The playing surface "will be covered by 4,500 tonnes of dirt for the speedway season-ending event -- a process that will take three days." Former speedway star, and now track builder, Ole Olsen "has ventured to quarries near Geelong this week to look for, and test, dirt mixtures that would best suit the makeshift Etihad Stadium circuit." Sergeant said that "he was working closely with Olsen to ensure there would be as little damage caused to the playing surface as possible." Sergeant believed that accommodating a Melbourne Victory home game one week after the Speedway Grand Prix "would be the pinnacle of highlighting the multipurpose nature and flexibility of the stadium." Having recently staged a One Direction concert, Etihad Stadium "will also play host to rock heavyweights the Foo Fighters this weekend" (THE AGE, 2/26).
