DAVIS LOVE was confirmed on Tuesday as the U.S. team captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup and a "new system allowing more weeks for captain's picks was also unveiled" (AFP, 2/25). ... Former National Rugby League player JARRYD HAYNE's U.S. agent JACK BECHTA said that the NFL San Francisco 49ers have offered Hayne an "intriguing blueprint on how they would transform him from a rugby league star into a successful NFL player." Contradicting Australian media reports, "Bechta said Hayne has not settled on the Detroit Lions as his team of choice." Hayne was deciding between the 49ers, Lions and the Seattle Seahawks and "could also take as long as early next week to select a team" (AAP, 2/25). ... Welsh FA President TREFOR LLOYD HUGHES said that his background in grassroots football "will help in his bid" for a place on FIFA's exec committee. Hughes is up against English FA nominee DAVID GILL, the ex-ManU CEO, for the FIFA VP reserved for the four British associations. Lloyd: "I've started at the very bottom and that's why I'm so passionate about moving ahead in developing the game" (BBC, 2/25). ... Australian Football League side Collingwood player ALAN TOOVEY's agent, JIM MARINIS, "has won the opening round of a court battle against the AFL Players' Association." Marinis can "access three documents, including his failed exam paper, the latter having prevented him from becoming an officially accredited AFL player agent" (THE AGE, 2/25). ... FIFA Exec Committee Member MICHEL D'HOOGHE "has been cleared of corruption by an investigation into the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups." FIFA's ethics committee found "insufficient evidence to suggest" that the 69-year-old Belgian "had violated their code of ethics" (BBC, 2/25). ... Former Italy captain FABIO CANNAVARO "has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for breaching orders to keep out of his property after it was seized by authorities." The 41-year-old, who played for Serie A side Parma, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid, and captained Italy to its 2006 World Cup triumph, "has been under investigation for tax evasion." In October, authorities in Naples seized almost €1M ($1.1M) of goods "linked to Cannavaro and his wife," as well as a €180,000 ($204,500) yacht (London GUARDIAN, 2/25). ... Spanish F1 driver FERNANDO ALONSO "was able to leave hospital in Barcelona on Wednesday, three days after a high-speed crash in pre-season practice." Alonso "had hit a wall at an estimated 150 miles an hour in his McLaren-Honda car during Sunday morning practice at the Circuit of Catalonia, just outside of Barcelona" and was airlifted to a hospital (XINHUA, 2/25).
