ARD, ZDF Reportedly Pay $488M For 2018, 2022 World Cup Broadcast Rights

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF "will reportedly pay more than ever before for the broadcast rights to the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups," according to Sidney Schering of QUOTENMETER. The broadcasters will reportedly pay €218M ($246M) for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and €214M ($242M) for the 2022 event in Qatar. Both numbers surpass the previous record of €210M that ARD and ZDF paid for last year's tournament in Brazil. The price increase is likely due to the success of the 2014 World Cup. The tournament "set numerous viewership and ratings records around the globe," including in Germany where the final attracted 34.65 million viewers (QUOTENMETER, 1/26).
