Rebel Scottish Hibernian Fans Speak Out Against Proposed Fan Ownership Model

Rebel Scottish Championship side Hibernian fans "are set to go public with their opposition to the new model of fan ownership proposed by the club," according to Gary Ralston of the Scotland DAILY RECORD. The club on Wednesday launched Hibernian Supporters Ltd. to "backing from key figures" like former player Pat Stanton, Proclaimer Charlie Reid and MSP Kenny MacAskill. It aims to give followers a controlling 51% stake in the club in return for an annual contribution of £225 ($342), or £18.75 ($28.48) a month. But it is "already facing opposition from a rump of supporters who have questioned its independence" after CEO Leeann Dempster was "appointed a director of the new shareholder vehicle." They are "ready to voice their concerns formally in the next 24 hours," but one source said, "The fan ownership model should be driven by fans. This initiative is not supporter-led. We have nothing personal against Leeann but we have concerns that the chief executive is also a director of HSL." MacAskill urged his fellow Hibs supporters to "take the club into fan ownership" after warning, "There are no sugar-daddies in Scottish football but plenty of sharks" (DAILY RECORD, 1/15).
