South Korean President Park Opposes Sharing PyeongChang Games With Japan

South Korean President Park Geun-hye said that "it is meaningless to discuss splitting the events of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games across a range of locations because work on the venues is already under way," according to Jun Ji-hye of the KOREA TIMES. It "was the first time that Park has openly opposed" a recommendation by the IOC that Korea should share the games with Japan. Park said, "We got to host the games with difficulty on our third bid and construction of each stadium is already under way. Given this, it is meaningless to discuss splitting (the events) and relevant ministries should respond to the IOC with clear and persuasive logic." Park's comments followed confirmation from PyeongChang Organizing Committee President Cho Yang-ho, who said there is "no possibility" that events will be shared outside Korea. Cho said all events for the Olympics and Paralympics will be held in South Korea "as planned" (KOREA TIMES, 12/15). YONHAP reported South Korean civic groups proposed Monday that "the rival Koreas co-host the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, saying it could help pave the way for unification of the divided peninsula." The Dhangoon National Peace and Unification Council, representing some 120 civic groups, "made the proposal in rejection of the suggested co-hosting of the international sports event by South Korea and Japan." The statement said, "The South and the North's co-hosting would form an opportunity (for the IOC) to fulfill the philosophy of the Olympics and for our (Korean) nation to overcome 70 years of division and the Cold War and open the door for unification" (YONHAP, 12/15).
