Spanish Superior Sports Council President Suggests EU-Regulated FFP System

Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) President Miguel Cardenal has "defended public regulation of professional sports that would guarantee financial fair play" and allow clubs to compete in int'l competitions under "equal conditions," according to AS. Cardenal: "In Spain what we have considered is that it seems opportune to us to have regulation at the community level, at the level of the EU, on professional sports, to be done in cooperation with the federations, with UEFA in the case of football." Cardenal insisted that such regulation "would apply not only to financial fair play, but to measures that would allow all teams to have a chance to win international competitions." He added that "if not, the one that earns the most will have the best players and will likely win." UEFA President Michel Platini also addressed the subject and "asked for help from the EU to eradicate 'immoral practices' in football" (AS, 10/21).
