Local Politician Vows To Help Spanish Second Division Side Racing Santander Clear Debt

Cantabria, Spain President Ignacio Diego criticized those responsible for the situation of second division side Racing Santander, which is "playing for its life" after Spain's IRS announced on Friday that the club "does not meet the legal requirements" to receive extra time to make the payments it owes, according to Gerardo Riquelme of MARCA. Diego called the management of the club "deplorable." The club is looking for a way to delay its deadline with the Spanish tax authorities on the €9M ($12.1M) that it owes by Thursday. Diego added that "since this weekend, the government's legal services and club executives have been working together to look for 'sufficient judicial basis' to allow for some path or exception to the regulations" (MARCA, 7/28).
