Olympic Notes: China Takes Youth Olympics Torch To Depth Of 5,555 Meters

China's "manned deep-sea submersible Jiaolong took a torch of the Youth Olympics to be held in China to the deep sea on Saturday in the northwest Pacific Ocean." During a more than 10-hour dive, the third of this year's expedition mission, the vehicle "reached a depth of 5,555 meters in the open sea" (XINHUA, 7/21). ... The Japanese government "is set to launch a project encouraging local governments nationwide to aid about 200 countries and territories in their preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, with 'one town' assigned to support 'one nation.'" The program "will be modeled on the 'one school, one nation' campaign in which each local school supported a foreign country," conducted before and during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games (ANN, 7/21). ... More than 3,700 athletes from 204 countries and regions "will be taking part in the summer Youth Olympic Games to be held next month in Nanjing." The Nanjing Organizing Committee for the 2014 Youth Olympics said that "a total of 3,787 athletes from 204 NOCs have completed registration procedures by the deadline of July 18 for the Nanjing Youth Games" (XINHUA, 7/21).
