Caterham F1 Team Owner Tony Fernandes Close To Decision Regarding Possible Sale

The Caterham F1 team's future is "expected to be resolved before the British Grand Prix, as its owner Tony Fernandes closes in on a deal to sell the outfit," according to Jonathan Noble of AUTOSPORT. Fernandes declared before the start of the season that "unless the Leafield-based team made significant progress this season then he would likely sever his ties with it." Fernandes: "If we're at the back I don't think I'm going to carry on. Nothing is set in stone, but after five years with no points there is a limit to one's patience, money, motivation, etc. So it's an important year." Speculation that a deal "was close" increased on Friday when, "shortly before closing down his official Twitter account, Fernandes suggested that he had given up on the F1 project." Fernandes tweeted, "F1 hasn't worked, but love Caterham Cars" (AUTOSPORT, 6/30). The BBC's Andrew Benson reported Caterham, which finished last in '13, is "again in that position this season." The team has "held talks with potential investors and buyers" including former Midland, Spyker and HRT team boss Colin Kolles, who is "trying to set up a Romanian F1 team" (BBC, 6/27).
