UEFA Downplays Blatter's Claims That Goal-Line Tech Will Be In Use At Euro 2016

UEFA has "played down comments" from FIFA President Sepp Blatter that goal-line technology "will be used at Euro 2016," according to Peter Wilson of the SUNDAY TIMES. UEFA said that it was "still considering using the technology in France but its introduction is not the 'done deal' Blatter has claimed." Blatter said that UEFA President Michel Platini had told him that goal-line technology "would be used" at Euro 2016. Platini has "long been an opponent of using technology in football matches." Blatter "changed his mind on the use of technology after England's Frank Lampard had a goal disallowed against Germany in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa." UEFA "tried to clarify the situation" on Saturday. A UEFA spokesperson said, "The president has said on the record that UEFA will look at introducing GLT [goal-line technology] at Euro 2016. However, it is not a case of snapping his fingers and making it happen. It will be discussed at the referees committee and has to be approved by the executive committee" (SUNDAY TIMES, 6/29).
