Grimshaw Architects Wins Int'l Competition, Will Design Series Of Complexes In Qatar

Grimshaw Architects has won an int'l competition to "design a series of sports complexes across Qatar," according to Merlin Fulcher of ARCHITECTS JOURNAL. The "AJ100 practice defeated an unnamed shortlist to win the Qatar Olympic Committee-backed project." The announcement came "shortly after a leading commentator warned of 'anxiety' among British architects and consultants involved in projects in Qatar following the latest allegations of corruption" linked to the 2022 World Cup. The outfit's winning concept has "been designed as a kit of parts which can be deployed anywhere within the Arab emirate." Sports pitches, courts, outdoor children’s playgrounds, public amenities and social areas are all included in the design (ARCHITECTS JOURNAL, 6/17).
