German Public Broadcasters ARD, ZDF Acquire Broadcast Rights To 2022 World Cup In Qatar

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF "have acquired the broadcast rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar," according to Marcel Pohlig of DWDL. FIFA "awarded the corresponding rights to the broadcasters." In addition to ARD and ZDF, "the BBC, ITV, Scandinavian channels and 30 further channels acquired World Cup rights through a package of the European Broadcast Union." In a press release, ARD and ZDF said that the rights acquisition guarantees "all important games of the FIFA World Cup will air live on free-to-air TV." The public broadcasters "received rights to all World Cup games." However, ARD spokesperson Ilka Steinhausen said that the channel "considers to sublicense certain games to private-TV channels or pay-TV network Sky" (DWDL, 6/9).
