Olympic Notes: Rio 2016 Tennis Test Event Postponed By Four Months

The Int'l Tennis Federation said that the Olympic tennis warmup event for the 2016 Rio Games "will be postponed by four months partly because of delays in construction." The test event had initially been scheduled to take place in Aug. '15. ITF Exec VP Juan Margets said that it "will now be held in December of that year." Margets: “We wanted August, one year before the Rio Olympics, so we will have the same weather conditions. That wasn’t possible, and they came back to us with one or two months’ delay" (BLOOMBERG, 5/31). ... Taiwan's Wu Ching-kuo, an exec IOC member, said that sports "can serve as a medium to help ease political tensions between Taiwan and China." Wu: "We can use sports to lubricate and smooth the political situation, but not solve political problems" (CNA, 5/31). ... European Olympic Committees have donated $100,000 "to support athletes in Ukraine amid the country's political crisis." Ukraine National Olympic Committee President Sergei Bubka said the donation "will give our work a significant boost." The European donation comes two weeks after the IOC gave $300,000 to help Ukrainian athletes (AP, 5/30).
