Leagues and Governing Bodies

NRL Brisbane Broncos Brace For Impact As League Investigates Salary Cap Infractions

National Rugby League side Brisbane Broncos CEO Paul White said that "he has offered the NRL full access to the club as the game’s governing body investigates allegations of salary cap irregularities dating back three years," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. White confirmed the club had "become aware of issues with the payment of players stemming back to the 2012 season." He said that the club’s early investigations indicated that "if allegations were substantiated, the amount involved in the player payments was" A$450,000 ($415,000). White "refused to point the finger at any individuals," although revelations of the salary cap irregularities emerged on the same day long-serving official Andrew Gee "parted ways with the Broncos." Gee "was previously in charge of the Broncos’ football operations, including the recruitment and retention of players" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 5/28). In Brisbane, Rothfield & Badel reported NRL COO Jim Doyle said that clubs who cheat the salary cap "will be caught." Salary cap auditor Jamie L’Oste Brown arrived in Brisbane on Wednesday as Deloitte's forensic accountants "examined the Broncos’ financial records for the past three years." The governing body "will specifically examine third-party agreements and the fact at least one big-name player is out of pocket for a six-figure amount" (COURIER-MAIL, 5/29).
