Marketplace Roundup: Coca-Cola Withdraws Ad Amid Controversy

Coca-Cola announced on Wednesday that it is "withdrawing its latest ad campaign after receiving a complaint from a terrorism victims' association." The commercials feature a Basque actor named Gotzon Sánchez who has "publicly and manifestly expressed sympathy for” Herrira, a support group for ETA (a Basque separatist movement) convicts that was "shut down by the Spanish High Court last September for funding and glorifying terrorism" (EL PAIS, 5/21). ... Hotel and entertainment complex NagaWorld "has renewed its main sponsorship of the Cambodian national tennis team bound for Iran in early June for this year’s Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group III campaign, extending its partnership with the squad for the third year running" (PHNOM PENH POST, 5/21). ... French online betting and gaming operator PMU has signed a four-year extension to its sponsorship deal with Ligue 1 side Paris St. Germain. The new sponsorship agreement will now additionally cover PSG's handball and women's football teams (PMU). ... German 3rd League football club Hansa Rostock "has signed a shirt sponsorship deal with online travel site kurzurlaub.de." The three-year deal "has a reported value in the seven-figure range." The club "is expected to officially announce the deal this week" (BILD, 5/21).
