Relegation From La Liga To Cost Financially-Strapped Club Osasuna

The cost of relegation from La Liga for Osasuna "is most keenly felt in the coffers of clubs, who slide down to the next category," according to INSIDE SPANISH FOOTBALL. TV revenue "is the biggest individual source of revenue for practically all clubs." At Osasuna, "that’s no different." Had they "stayed in the Primera, their slice of the TV pie would have risen" from €22M ($30M) to €23.5M ($32M). For the most part, that revenue stream "is now lost." TV revenue in the Segunda next season is "only expected to net the club" around €2.5M ($3.4M). There is "some compensation for teams descending from the Primera, in the form of parachute payments." In this case, Osasuna would receive around €13M ($17.8M) "split into two payments over two seasons, should they fail to return to the Spanish top-flight." A "more urgent and pressing matter" is the existing debts that "must be resolved urgently, if Osasuna are to avoid a further 'administrative' relegation." Osasuna has "outstanding debt payments to be made and specifically, they include late salary payments to players and staff," which amount to the sum of around €7M ($9.5M). Under Spanish Football League rules, these debts "must be paid" before July 31, otherwise the club "could face the very real threat of suffering a further relegation to the Segunda B, the third-tier of Spanish football" (INSIDE SPANISH FOOTBALL, 5/21).
