IOC Calls Russian Report That Moscow Could Replace Rio As 2016 Olympics Host 'Fantasy'

A second report in four days suggesting the 2016 Olympics "could be moved from Rio de Janeiro due to preparations delays has been dismissed" by the IOC, according to Nick Zaccardi of NBC SPORTS. Russia's RIA Novosti reported that Moscow "is being considered as a replacement" for Rio to host the 2016 Olympics. In an email, IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said, “It is pure fantasy” (NBC SPORTS, 5/12). RIA NOVOSTI cited a unanimous IOC source who said that Moscow is being considered "amid doubts that facilities in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro will be completed on time." The source added that Moscow's ability to afford the Games "was still a question, and that the city could face a few difficulties in preparing certain sport facilities, such as in sailing, equestrian events and cycling." It was reported last week that the IOC "had secretly asked" London to host the 2016 Games if Rio was not ready (RIA NOVOSTI, 5/12).
