Football Notes: FIFA Presidential Candidate Says He Would Strip Qatar Of World Cup

France's Jerome Champagne said that he would "consider stripping Qatar of the 2022 World Cup if elected as the next FIFA president." Champagne has formally declared his candidacy for the presidential race next May. The significance of Champagne speaking out on Qatar "should not be underestimated because he is free to speak" -- as a current FIFA outsider -- in a way in which FIFA President Sepp Blatter "cannot as current president." Champagne: ''If nothing irregular has happened then maybe the World Cup does still go [to Qatar]. And if it has happened then all options, including moving the World Cup, have to be on the table'' (London DAILY MAIL, 5/10). ... Blatter "has called on the Italian Football Federation to take action after bananas were thrown" at players of Serie A side AC Milan by Atalanta fans. He has "also demanded a response" from the Russian Football Union after a Dinamo Moscow player "was punched by a fan during the abandoned match against Zenit St Petersburg." Blatter tweeted, "Racism, and games stopped/abandoned due to acts of hooliganism. Each federation needs to act. Sanctions are available & HAVE to be applied" (BBC, 5/12). ... FIFA "appears to have opted for a tentative approach in its long-running efforts to reform the agent system." An official circular recently sent to FIFA members preparing for next month's Congress in São Paulo "seems to indicate that a possible 3% cap on remuneration payable to 'intermediaries' would be by recommendation only" (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 5/12).

FEMALE REF MAKES DEBUT: Fernanda Colombo Uliana's debut as an assistant referee in Brazil's top flight "ended in controversy on Sunday after she denied visitors Cruzeiro a last-gasp chance to equalise against derby rivals Atletico Mineiro with a debateable offside call." Cruzeiro was 2-1 down with just minutes left when Allison "was put through on goal, but Uliana raised her flag for offside, a decision that replays appeared to suggest was incorrect." Uliana, who had previously officiated in Brazil cup matches, was "making her Serie A debut on Sunday" (BRISBANE TIMES, 5/12). ... Fifteen people "have been killed in a stampede at a football final in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo." The trouble began toward the end of the game when the home team AS Vita was losing 0-1 to TP Mazembe. The home fans "began throwing stones on to the pitch." Police "then fired teargas to try and stop them, but the tens of thousands of fans in the crowd panicked and began pushing towards one exit" (BBC, 5/12). ... Portugal's Government on Monday announced that it will "temporarily repeal the regulation preventing planes from landing during the early morning due to the thousands of tourists who will visit the country" for the finals of the Champions League on May 24 in Lisbon. This exception to the law "will allow planes to land from 12-6am between May 23 and 25 at airports in Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Beja" (EFE, 5/12).
