Football Notes: In-Fighting Among Quilmes Fans Mars Argentine First Division Football

At least "nine football fans were injured on Monday night during a fight between two factions of Argentine first division side Quilmes fans." The "brawl occurred before Quilmes' match at first division rival All Boys' el Centenario stadium." Five police officers "intervened to break up the fight and suffered various bruises and injuries" (EFE, 3/10). ... Nigeria’s footballers stand to gain more than $100,000 each, should the African champions win every game at the World Cup and win the tournament. The Nigeria Football Federation "is requesting that lawmakers approve" a 1.2B-naira ($7.3M) "war chest" for the Super Eagles’ bid "to become the competition’s first African winners" (AFP, 3/11). ... Zambia's football governing body said that it "intends to adopt an electronic ticketing system" to avert rampant fraud in view of the country's bid to host the 2019 African Cup of Nations (XINHUA, 3/11). ... An eight-member delegation from the Asian Football Confederation "completed an inspection visit to the UAE last week," as the country prepares to put in a bid to host the 2019 Asian Cup. The delegation visited stadiums in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al Ain (THE NATIONAL, 3/10). ... Brazil President Dilma Rousseff "has reiterated her concern about racism in football after a spate of incidents involving Brazilian players and officials." In comments posted on Twitter, Rousseff "lent her support to former Brazil international midfielder Arouca, who was racially abused by a fan" while representing Santos against Mogi Mirim in the Sao Paulo state championship on Thursday. Rousseff said, "It's inadmissable that Brazil, the country with the largest black population out of Africa, has racism issues" (XINHUA, 3/10).
