London's Wembley Stadium will host the rematch between WBA and IBF super-middleweight champion Carl Froch and George Groves on May 31 with promoters "expecting to sell more tickets than for any post-World War Two fight in Britain," according to Alan Baldwin of REUTERS. The fight will be the first staged at the new national stadium in North London, which re-opened in '07 and seats 90,000. Promoter Eddie Hearn: "I think we have got the product to fill stadiums like this. When you get an opportunity to do so, you have to grab it with both hands." The current highest attendance recorded at a British bout was 55,000 who watched local IBO light-welterweight champion Ricky Hatton take on Mexican Juan Lazcano at the City of Manchester stadium in '08 (REUTERS, 3/4). In London, Jack de Menezes reported the announcement "does pose organisers a problem," with England's national football team set to play in a World Cup warm-up the day before against Peru. Efforts to transform the stadium "will run right up until the first bout on the undercard, with attempts to lay the correct ground on the Wembley turf as well as provide enough catering facilities."
