Football Notes: Nine Uruguayan Footballers Could Face Jail Time Following On-Field Brawl

The nine players arrested following a fight during a game on Tuesday night between Uruguayan sides Nacional and Peñarol "were due in court on Wednesday." The players "could face jail sentences ranging from three to 24 months" (EFE, 1/22). ... Citing experts, Brazilian daily O Globo reported a surge in demand may overload and crash Wi-Fi services during the World Cup this summer, "unless more money is spent to upgrade infrastructure." The rise in sales of tablets and smartphones with 3G and 4G Internet connection in Brazil could lead to an "avalanche in data traffic" that could interrupt access during the event.  Data traffic in '14 "is expected to rise" 65% in Brazil, to 19.2 billion gigabytes (XINHUA, 1/22). ... A-League club Wellington Phoenix "may well be gunning" for Arsenal to play on Kiwi soil in July. Phoenix Managing Dir David Dome "spent a week in Great Britain just before Christmas trying to lure" an EPL club. He "refused to name the clubs he approached." However, he dropped what could be a hint when he said, "One of the things that's been brought up is our Huawei sponsorship. It is a significant relationship." Huawei has "made a couple of announcements in that area over the past couple of weeks." Last week "a new partnership was announced between Arsenal and telecommunications specialist Huawei" (FAIRFAX NZ NEWS, 1/22). ... Argentine first division side Estudiantes' headquarters "came under attack by fans of rival club Gimnasia, who threw stones at the building while trying to enter it by force on Tuesday night." The "intruders were intercepted by Estudiantes personnel and fled without being identified." One minor was "injured in the attack" (CLARIN, 1/22).
