Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam's Amsterdam ArenA, the Netherlands' largest football stadium, will soon begin installing a solar panel roof covering an area of 7,000 square meters. This will involve the installation of an estimated 42,000 solar panels on the arena's rooftop. The system will allow the stadium to generate an annual total of approximately 930,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. Amsterdam ArenA GreenDeal partners Nuon, BAM and Arcadis will install the solar panels in conjunction with Oskomera, which will supply and mount the photovoltaic panels. The rooftop panels will cover roughly the size of a football pitch. Installation is planned for the first half of this year. The solar panels will generate about 10% of the current annual electricity consumption. The panels will be installed on the non-translucent, non-moving parts of the stadium roof, mounted as a strip along the entire circumference above the rain gutter. The solar array is expected to generate the equivalent of powering about 270 Dutch homes for one year. The panels will prevent the emission of 430 tons of carbon dioxide -- the equivalent to the annual emissions of 180 cars (Amsterdam ArenA).
