Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Ángel María Villar "has led Spanish football for a quarter of a century, but far from exhausted, Villar assured that every day he has more desire to remain the head of Spanish football," according to Miguel Ángel Lara of MARCA. Villar recently "discussed his thoughts on the upcoming World Cup and the current status of Spanish football." The following is an excerpt from the Q&A:
Q: Is Brazil prepared to host the World Cup?
Ángel María Villar: Of course. We are talking about a great country, an emerging power. Brazil will host an extraordinary World Cup, as South Africa did.
Q: Will Sao Paulo be ready for the opening World Cup match?
Villar: Sure, I have no doubt. It is a country with all the possibilities in the world.
Q: After what you saw during the Confederations Cup, how do you expect Spain to be treated at the World Cup?
Villar: Very well, as they always have been.
Q: You have denied various cases of match-fixing. Is Spanish football 100% clean?
Villar: Spanish football is clean. I say that it is clean, and it is.
Q: Regarding schedules, is balance in La Liga declining?
Villar: We will see. Spanish football is very good, but there are things to improve. I understand the schedules. Broadcasters invest a lot of money and the businesses have to profit from this investment and earn money to be able to pay the clubs. Of course things could improve, but when somebody pays money, they pay to choose the date and the time.
Q: In your long tenure leading the RFEF, what has the Spanish national team become?
Villar: A leader in world football. The whole world looks at Spain's example and wants to copy it (MARCA, 12/8).
