Cologne, Dusseldorf Submit Bids To Host Second DEL Winter Game In 2015

German Hockey League (DEL) clubs Cologne Sharks and Dusseldorf EG "have submitted bids to the second DEL Winter Game in Jan. '15," according to DER TAGESSPIEGEL. While Cologne "plans to host the Winter Game at the Veltins Arena, which is the home of football Bundesliga club FC Schalke, Dusseldorf wants to play the game at the home of 2nd Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf, the Dusseldorf Arena." The arena in Dusseldorf has a capacity of 54,600. The arena in Schalke hosted the opening game of the 2010 Int'l Ice Hockey Federation World Championship between Germany and the U.S. A total of 77,803 spectators attended Germany's 2-1 victory in OT, which "was at the time a new attendance world record for a hockey game." The league "will make a decision on which city will host the game in January" (DER TAGESSPIEGEL, 12/4).
