European Club Association Chair Backs April World Cup For Qatar 2022

European Club Association Chair Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said that the "Qatar World Cup could be moved from summer to April 2022," according to Jonathan Northcroft of the SUNDAY TIMES. Rummenigge has opened talks with FIFA President Sepp Blatter, and "believes a spring tournament could solve the problem of severe temperatures." Last month, FIFA "asked for ideas on Qatar 2022 after Blatter accepted that holding the finals there at the height of summer could put players and spectators at risk." A "decision is not expected" until late '14 "at the earliest but Rummenigge has been quick to offer his views" to Blatter. One is that "April -- not the winter months, the alternative so far most commonly proposed -- might be the best time to play." Rummenigge said, "They [FIFA] are doing research now. They started last month. Clubs are believing that we can move -- I believe everyone is aware we have to move from summer to another date -- but the problem is we, the leagues, the clubs and the players, have to find the best date. Every one of us is ready to move but we have to find a date that is not disturbing the leagues and the clubs. Maybe that is winter, but maybe I said to myself it would be better in April" (SUNDAY TIMES, 10/20).
