IOC Member Juan Antonio Samaranch Salisachs Admits Madrid's Errors Were Costly
Spanish IOC member Juan Antonio Samaranch Salisachs on Monday admitted to "'errors' that cost the Madrid 2020 bid," according to MUNDO DEPORTIVO. Salisachs said, "We committed some small errors, but each little thing can have an influence on the vote. We did not have votes to spare by making small mistakes. We were not convincing when asked about the Operation Puerto doping case. We were strong on the topic of doping, but not with Operation Puerto, and this cost some votes. There was also a list of 50 IOC voters supposedly set to vote for Madrid that was published by Spanish media that really angered a lot of IOC members. The IOC members identified it as a leak from the Madrid 2020 bid, and it was impossible to erase this stain during the last days of the process" (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 9/10).
