Football Notes: Angry Players Force Brazilian Referee To Call Riot Police
A referee "called riot police on to the pitch during a Brazilian championship match to protect him from angry players following a bizarre incident involving a penalty" (REUTERS, 9/8). ... Palestinian FA Chair Jibril Rajoub said that FIFA's "initiative to resolve travel restrictions on Palestinian players is doomed to fail unless Israel abandons its 'bullying policy' and stops 'playing games'" (HAARETZ, 9/8). ... UEFA punished Hungarian side Honved with a €50,000 ($65,905) fine and has forced the club to play two games behind closed doors for "racist actions by its fans during a Europa League match in July." UEFA also said "Polish sides Lech Poznan and Piast Gliwice have to close the parts of their stadium where 'ultras' sit for their next European matches for 'fans' racist conduct and display of a racist sign.'" Both teams were fined €5,000 ($6,591) (LA AFICION, 9/6).
