Russian officials said Wednesday that some Gold Medal winners at the Sochi Winter Olympics "are set to be rewarded for their out-of-this-world performances with extra medals embedded with meteorite fragments," according to R-SPORT. The special medals "are on offer to athletes who win their events" on Feb. 15, the one-year anniversary of a meteorite strike that injured 1,600 people, smashing windows and causing other damage in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. Chelyabinsk Region Culture Minister Alexei Betekhtin said that chunks of that very space rock "are to be chipped off and inserted into the medals." Seven "sets of medals are on offer" on Feb. 15: in the men's 1,500 meter speedskating, the women's 1,000m and men's 1,500 short track, the women's cross-country skiing relay, the men's K-125 ski jump, the women's super giant slalom, and men's skeleton events (R-SPORT, 7/24).

Discovery Underground, a 10km night race the Madrid 2020 Olympic bid will hold in the Spanish capital's metro facilities and film for a documentary about the bid's support, has drawn more than 7,000 requests for its 100 slots for participants. Each person who has applied to run in the race, which starts on Saturday, "has explained his or her reasons for wanting to participate" (AS, 7/23). ... China has "responded favorably" to a request from the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia "to let some of the Kingdom's athletes in select disciplines make use of the high-tech training facilities in Beijing to prepare for this year's SEA Games" in Myanmar in December (PHNOM PENH POST, 7/24). ... Holland Heineken House will once again be the home base for athletes and their families, media, sponsors and fans during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Heineken and NOC*NSF have confirmed that a suitable location has been found. The Holland Heineken House in Sochi will be situated on the edge of the Olympic Park and will have a view of the Olympic Games as they unfold (Heineken). ... A film which tells the story of the legacy of the 2012 London Games was released Wednesday by London & Partners, the Mayor's promotional organization for London, just a day ahead of the first anniversary of the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics Games. The five-minute video tells the story of how London is benefiting from hosting the Games less than 12 months after the Paralympic Closing Ceremony (London & Partners).
