Hoy admitted to compete at next year’s Commonwealth Games "would be a year too far." Hoy: "Today, I formally announce my retirement from international competition" (London INDEPENDENT, 4/18). ... Singapore bowler JAZREEL TAN was named the U.S. Collegiate Bowler of the Year for the third year running (STRAITS TIMES, 4/18). ... British discus thrower LAWRENCE OKOYE "has embarked on a remarkable bid to become an American Football star even though he has never played the sport." While on a discus training camp in the U.S. at the start of this month "he decided to apply to try out" for the NFL. At Atlanta's Regional Combine "he impressed to be chosen for the Super Regional Combine in Dallas, in front of all 32 NFL teams" and has the chance to enter the NFL draft (BANGKOK POST, 4/18). ... French politician RACHIDA DATI, a candidate to be the mayor of Paris, has declared herself a LIONEL MESSI fan. Dati said that "the only reason she would leave politics would be if Messi proposed to marry her" (MARCA, 4/18).

GRAND PRIX MILESTONE: Red Bull driver MARK WEBBER will join Ferrari's FERNANDO ALONSO and McLaren's JENSON BUTTON on Sunday "as the only current drivers on the Formula One circuit with at least 200 grand prix races to their names" (BRISBANE TIMES, 4/18). ... Former Brazilian footballer RONALDO has arrived in the U.K. and will meet with execs from ad firm WPP "to learn about the industry in the coming months" (CAMPAIGN LIVE, 4/18). ... Singapore FA (FAS) and the S-League "are raising funds" for former FAS Chair N. GANESAN. Ganesan suffered a stroke in '11 and has been confined to a nursing home since (STRAITS TIMES, 4/18). ... Spanish fifth-tier side Deportivo Canillas President MANUEL ÁLVAREZ has apologized to Real Madrid head coach JOSE MOURINHO a day after saying that Mourinho would not be with Real Madrid next season. Thursday, Álvarez said, "I hope Mourinho forgives me and that he's not annoyed with me" (MARCA, 4/18). ... LUCIA GUISADO has been named coach of Spain's women's gymnastics team, replacing JESUS CARBALLA, who had held the job for 33 seasons. Carballo was "removed from his post" by the Superior Sports Council based on accusations made by a former gymnast (EL PAIS, 4/17).
