Australian Horse Trainer Gai Waterhouse Urges Race Officials To Increase Prize Money

Australian horse trainer Gai Waterhouse has urged racing officials to offer A$3M ($3.1M) for a showdown between champion mares Black Caviar and More Joyous at Royal Randwick next month, according to Ray Thomas of the DAILY TELEGRAPH. Waterhouse challenged the Australian Turf Club and Racing New South Wales to find the prize money for what she believes will be "the greatest race in the world." There "is a good chance unbeaten world champion sprinter Black Caviar and Sydney's glamour mare More Joyous could meet" in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1,400m) at Randwick on April 27. Racing NSW CEO Peter V'landys revealed that "discussions between Racing NSW and the ATC have already begun about providing additional prizemoney if Black Caviar and More Joyous are to meet in the All Aged Stakes." V'landys said, "We won't just put the All Aged up to $3M because what would happen if one or both mares do not start in the race? But Racing NSW and ATC are looking at financial incentives to try to get the two mares to race each other" (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 3/13).
