McLaren, Honda In Talks To Team Up Again For F1 Comeback In '14

If F1's proposed new engine regulations are not scrapped at the eleventh hour, the chances of a Honda comeback with McLaren seem very good," according to Mario Fritzsche of MOTORSPORT-TOTAL.com. McLaren and Honda have a very successful F1 history. The two companies worked together between '88-92. During those five years, "the partnership between chassis manufacturer McLaren and engine manufacturer Honda led four drivers' championships and four constructors' championships, as well as 44 race victories in 80 races." In '88, the only year in which McLaren used a turbo engine from Honda, the team "humiliated its opponents winning 15 of 16 races." McLaren currently uses Mercedes engines, however, "its contract with the German manufacturer expires at the end of '13, just in time before the new regulations take effect." Starting in '14, F1 cars "will be powered by a 1.6-liter V6 turbo engine." Nothing has been confirmed yet, but Honda reportedly has already developed a 1.6-liter turbo engine in its engine plant in Tochigi, Japan (MOTORSPORT-TOTAL.com, 10/24).
