Hamburg Based GMP Teams Up With Spanish Firm L35 To Bid For Bernabéu Remodeling Project

There are now "four candidates in the running for the Santiago Bernabéu" remodeling project, according to Carpio & Calderón of MARCA. German architectural firm GMP and Spanish company L35 have teamed up to compete in the bid against three other alliances. The other teams bidding for the project are: Estudio Lamela-Populous, Moneo-Herzog & De Meuron and Foster-Rafael de la Hoz. In the past, the Hamburg-based architectural firm has made its mark on important int'l projects, "many of which have been sports related." They designed the Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth), Cape Town and Moses Mabhida (Durban) stadiums for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. For Euro 2012, they designed the Kiev Olympic Stadium that hosted the final of the tournament. More teams could form "as the period for presentation of projects ends on Sept. 14." Until then, Real Madrid is "open to ideas and proposals" (MARCA, 8/7).
