Collingwood FC Surging In International Popularity
Australian Football League side Collingwood is "joining ManU and Liverpool as a football team with a global following," according to Simon Canning of THE AUSTRALIAN. Nicknamed the Magpie Army, the club has gained the "reputation of being the most supported club in Australia," with more than 71,000 members and extending to 88 countries. Driving interest with Magpies fans in other countries has come from investment in the club's own studios, allowing "content to be created on the fly." Collingwood CEO Gary Pert said, "We have invested a lot of money in the website, online, radio and TV and I think the whole appreciation of the Collingwood supporter base is bigger." The club "plans to build on its international sponsors" of Emirates, Russian anti-computer virus company Kaspersky Lab and adidas (THE AUSTRALIAN, 7/02).
