London Welsh Fighting In Court For Spot In Rugby Premiership
Next season's Rugby Premiership schedule comes out Wednesday, but whether the 12th position is occupied by London Welsh or Newcastle "may still be undecided," according to Paul Rees of the London GUARDIAN. London Welch appealed the Rugby Football Union's decision to deny them promotion. London Welsh, who won the Championship play-off final against Cornish Pirates, was deemed by the RFU to have failed to meet the "minimum standards criteria." The Exiles submitted a "43-page response to the decision" that will be considered by an "independent three-man appeal panel." In addition, the club believes that the criteria "contravene European competition and fair trading law and are prepared to go to the high court" to fight their case. Newcastle, Premiership Rugby and the RFU have "indicated they will consider legal action" if the panel rules in favour of London Welsh (GUARDIAN, 6/27).
