Banned Cricketer A 'Danger To The Game'

England’s cricket authorities handed down a life ban to Pakistan bowler Danish Kaneria for corruption, describing him as “a grave danger to the game of cricket," according to Roger Blitz of the FINANCIAL TIMES. A disciplinary panel found him guilty of “cajoling and pressurising” former Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield into "deliberately underperforming in a match" against Durham in '09. The England and Wales Cricket Board said that the Pakistan int'l "had recruited spot-fixers" on behalf of Indian businessman Arun or Anu Bhatt, known to anti-corruption officials "for his alleged involvement in illegal betting" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 6/22).
