The business of equipping Team Great Britain athletes with "armfuls of official kit is described as the ultimate shopping experience," according to Marina Hyde of the London GUARDIAN. Over the next few weeks, 550 athletes will pass through Loughborough University preparation camp. Between them will be distributed 175,000 bits of adidas kit and 87,000 items of Next formalwear. The "technical objective for this approach is Woodwardian," after the British Olympic Association's Elite Performance Dir Woodward Clive, whose influence "looms heavily over the facility." Clive has made a special video, which they are played "before being kitted out." It is so classified that "journalists are banned from seeing it." Athletes are met by personal shoppers, seamstresses and packers who "whisk them enthusiastically through the departments to kit them and fit them" (GUARDIAN, 6/19).
ON A BOAT: Boating manufacturer Beneteau U.K. "handed over" a fleet of 23 powerboats to LOCOG at a ceremony in Weymouth. The boats, worth £3.6M ($5.7M), will be used to accommodate referees, journalists, organizers and VIPs, including royalty, during the Games. The yachts supplied to LOCOG include the Antares, Swift Trawlers, Gran Turismo and Barracudas (BOATING BUSINESS, 6/18).
