Qatar Cabinet Approves Formation Of Workers' Committees
Qatar's Labor Minister has announced that the country's cabinet has approved the formation of workers' committees ahead of the 2022 World Cup, according to Mostafa Sheshtawy of GULF NEWS. Labour Minister Nasser Bin Abdullah Hamidi said that "the committee draft is awaiting the approval of Emir Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani." This announcement came a day before Human Rights Watch published a report saying that "Qatar should overhaul labour laws for migrant workers before the 2022 World Cup." The report pointed out that Qatari laws "prohibit migrant workers from forming unions or going on strike," in violation of the Int'l Labour Organisation regulations (GULF NEWS, 6/15).
