There were "many Canadians sprinkled among the more than 23,000 fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium" to see Bianca Andreescu defeat Serena Williams in the U.S. Open women's final yesterday. Andreescu is the "first Canadian Grand Slam singles champion." The Canadian support was "small but vocal" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/8). Andreescu is the "first woman" to win the U.S. Open in her tournament debut (AP, 9/7). The sellout crowd "pulled hard for Williams and occasionally applauded Andreescu’s errors and missed serves" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/8). Andreescu "received congratulations" from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Basketball HOFer Steve Nash and the Raptors, who "tweeted a photo of their NBA championship trophy alongside a jersey with her name on it" (L.A. TIMES, 9/8). Canadian tennis fans from Edmonton to Montreal "gathered to watch Andreescu" at viewing parties (TORONTO STAR, 9/8).

For the fourth time in two years, Williams "made it to the final of a Grand Slam tournament." And for the fourth time in two years, she was "beaten in straight sets by a player a fraction of her age" (NEWSDAY, 9/8). In DC, Sally Jenkins writes under the header, "Serena Williams Faces Some Hard Truths After Falling Short Again In A Grand Slam" (WASHINGTON POST, 9/8). There were "no boos" during the award ceremony following the match, and "no tears of dismay from Andreescu" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/8). Andreescu is "fiery and fearless," making her "fun to watch" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 9/7).
