Twins, Cubs Latest Clubs To Battle Frigid Weather Early In Season

The Twins yesterday morning originally postponed their 1:10pm CT game against the White Sox to today due to a snowstorm, but by mid-afternoon the club "gave up, declaring the season-opening homestand over after playing just six of 10 scheduled games." This weekend is the "first time since Target Field opened" in '10 that three consecutive games have been "called off by weather." Last year was the "first time that four Target Field games in one season were lost to weather, a mark that the team has now matched in the last week alone" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 4/15).

Meanwhile, only "1,000 or so fans at bitterly cold Wrigley Field" yesterday afternoon braved the conditions for Cubs-Braves, as the game's wind-chill factor in the eighth inning "dipped to 25 degrees." Cubs manager Joe Maddon: "We’re going to do what we’re asked or told to do, but I’m just here to tell you those were the worst elements I’ve ever participated in a baseball game, ever. ... The game really should not have been played" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/15). Braves P Luke Jackson added, "If we all don’t come out of here with pneumonia I think we’ll be alright, I think we’ll have won this trip. That’s pretty ridiculous" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 4/15).
