By John Ourand

The American Forces Network "will be up" this afternoon, and will "air both the NFC and AFC title games as originally planned" despite the government shutdown. The Pentagon yesterday had said that AFN would "remain unavailable if the shutdown continued" into today. The NFL's response was to "make the games available online for free through NFL Game Pass, but only at USO Centers." It is "unclear who reversed the initial decision, or why, or what the reasoning for the initial decision was in the first place" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 1/21).

Atlanta United formally signed MF Ezequiel Barco on Friday, setting a "new record for an MLS transfer" and wrapping up what club President Darren Eales "described as the toughest deal he’s ever put together." It took five months of negotiations to land Barco from Argentinean club Independiente, and Eales said the reported transfer fee of $15M was "in the ballpark." That is "by far the most ever paid by an MLS team for a player" (AJC.com, 1/19). CBS Sports Network’s Amy Trask today said the "number one" change that needs to occur in the NFL offseason is to “reboot the relationship" between the league and the NFLPA. Trask: "Hit control-alt-delete. Do what you have to do, go out for ice cream together -- I’ll buy it. Everyone is invested in the health and success of the league. … Involve some owners and involve some players in the process, don’t just leave it to De Smith and Roger Goodell. Grab Robert Kraft, grab Richard Sherman. Invite them to the table."
