Mayweather-Alvarez Bout Sets Record Gate Of Over $20M

Floyd Mayweather Jr. last night defeated Canelo Alvarez "at the sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena, where the all-time gate record of $20,003,150 was set by the more than 16,746 in attendance." The fight "likely will set the record for the richest event in boxing history and could challenge the all-time pay-per-view record of 2.44 million buys," both set by a Mayweather bout against Oscar De La Hoya in '07 (ESPN.com, 9/14). The crowd early in the fight was "chanting 'Si se puede' (yes we can), and 'Ca-Ne-Lo,'" but by the eighth round was "chanting 'TMT, TMT,' (The Money Team) and 'USA, USA'" (USATODAY.com, 9/15). A "remarkable crowd of 12,200" attended Friday's weigh-in (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 9/13).
