Former NASL Commissioner Phil Woosnam Dead At 80 Years Old
Former NASL Commissioner Phil Woosnam died Friday night at 80 years old after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. Soccer "planted its roots" in the U.S. during Woosnam's 15-year tenure as commissioner (NEWSDAY, 7/20). MLS Commissioner Don Garber called Woosnam "one of the pioneers" of pro soccer in North America. Garber: "We will always remember his passion for, and his contributions to, our sport" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 7/21).
