Sports World Continues Speaking Out Against Social Injustice

The sports world continues to react to the death of George Floyd and protests across the nation over the weekend. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in an internal memo to league employees wrote, “Together with our teams and players, we will continue our efforts to promote inclusion and bridge divides through collective action, civic engagement, candid dialogue and support for organizations working toward justice and equality” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 5/31). Meanwhile, Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban was “among those attending” a prayer vigil outside Dallas Police HQ yesterday. Cuban: “This is our community; our country. Both are hurting. I wanted to be here to listen. To understand better the pain the African American community is going through” (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/1).

Others making their voices heard:

  • Michael Jordan: “We must listen to each other, show compassion and empathy and never turn our backs on senseless brutality.”
  • Jed York: “Before we are able to realize impactful change, we must first have the courage and compassion as human beings to come together and acknowledge the problem: black men, women, children and other oppressed minorities continue to be systematically discriminated against.”
  • Mark Davis: “Not Only Do We Have To Tell People There Is Something Wrong. We Have To Come Up With Solutions.”
  • Steve Koonin: “Stop hiding behind your badges, stop breaking parents hearts, and stop pretending this isn’t happening. Start ... loving each other, start listening to each other, and start celebrating our differences.”
  • Doc Rivers: “Our society must start getting comfortable with the uncomfortable conversation and do the right thing.”
  • LeBron James: “Why Doesn’t America Love US!!!!!????TOO.”
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: “What I want to see is not a rush to judgment, but a rush to justice."
  • NHL: “The NHL stands with all those who are working to achieve a racially just society, and against all those who perpetuate and uphold racism, hatred, bigotry and violence.”
  • Masai Ujiri: “The conversation can no longer be avoided because it is hard. We have to have it. Now."
  • Nick Saban: "We're at an important moment for our country, and now is the time for us to choose kindness, tolerance, understanding, empathy, and most importantly ... it's time to love each other."
  • James Franklin: "It's more critical now than ever, we recognize our differences should not divide us but truly strengthen the fabric of who We Are!" (Mult., 6/1).
